No Second Troy
WHY should I blame her that she filled my days
With misery, or that she would of late
Have taught to ignorant men most violent ways,
Or hurled the little streets upon the great,
Had they but courage equal to desire?
What could have made her peaceful with a mind
That nobleness made simple as a fire,
With beauty like a tightened bow, a kind
That is not natural in an age like this,
Being high and solitary and most stern?
Why, what could she have done, being what she is?
Was there another Troy for her to burn?

그녀가 나의 나날들을 불행으로 가득 채웠다고 해서.
또는 그녀가 최근에 무지한 백성들에게
가장 격렬한 방법을 가르쳤다고 해서.
또는 작은 골목길을 저 큰 대로에다가 내던졌다고 해도
단지 그들이(아일랜드인) 우리의 욕망에 걸맞는 용기만 있다면
도대체 무엇이 그녀를 진정시킬 수 있단 말이냐?
귀족적인 고상함이 하나의 불꽃처럼 단순하게
만들어버린 마음씨를 가진 그녀
팽팽하게 당겨진 활과 같은 아름다움을 가진,
오늘과 같은 시대에 흔하지 않은 족속,
고독하게 살아가면서, 엄격하게 살아가는 그녀.
그 여자가 불 태워야 할 또 하나의 트로이가 있단 말이냐?
▶첫번째 Troy는 헬렌 때문에 태워진 그 Troy이고,
두 번째 트로이는 Yeats가 짝사랑한
Maud Gonne 으로 인해 태워질 Troy를 말하는 것이다.
이 시에서 그는 꿈을 꾸는 단계에를 벗어나
현실적인 단계로(Dublin은 영국으로부터의 독립
을 위한 투쟁중, 독자들은 Semiliterate 인 상태..) .
그래서 Yeats는 예술과 명예를 모르는
돈과 권력에만 관심 있는 중산계급(middle-class, semiliterate)를 싫어함.
